Using FrontPage to Edit Your Web

The full version of FrontPage 2002 can be purchased from a variety of sources for $149 to $169.  FrontPage is packaged with certain versions of Microsoft Office.

Lesson 1 of the FrontPage user's manual addresses the procedure for editing using FrontPage.  A summary follows:

To Edit using FrontPage

1.  At the lower left of the screen, choose Start > Programs > Microsoft FrontPage

2.  Click on File > Open Web > (enter) http://www.yourdomainname.com or the login we supplied to you, e.g., http://first10charactersofyourdomainname.cwwebs.com (no suffix) > Open

3.  Enter the user name your were assigned (asdfg123) (example) and password (123asdfg) > OK

Your will see folders appear on the screen

4.  Click on the Open button

5.  You will see a list of folders on the left.  Choose the file you wish to open by double-clicking on it.
(index.htm or index.html are typically the home page - occasionally default.htm or default.html are used)

6.  Make your changes and save them (typically File > Save or File > Save as (you can also click on the diskette at the upper left of your FrontPage screen.))  If you are uncomfortable with the changes or wish to test them prior to saving them to the original file, save them under another name, e.g., yournametest (the .htm will be automatically added.)  You can open a normal browser window and view the change(s).  Click on refresh or reload if you do not see the changes.  Once you are satisfied with the "copy", save it over the original using File > Save as.

7.  When you are finished, choose File > Exit.

You should periodically, if not daily, make a backup of the Web server on  your PC hard drive or e.g., CD ROM or Zip Disk by following the following procedure while the site is open:
File > Publish Web > (name the area in which you wish to save the Web, e.g., c:\yourdesiredharddrivestoragefileame.)   See chapter 8 of the user manual.

You can learn more about FrontPage by going through the FrontPage tutorial in the FrontPage 2000 manual.

Other Tips and FAQ's

  • To single space, click on Shift > Enter (double-space is the default.)
  • To import images, click on File > Import.  You can highlight several files.  We typically set up an image folder (or folders) and import the files to the folder.  You can then File > Insert or drag and drop images from the Folder List on the upper left of the screen to the desired location.
  • To organize images, change to the Views to Folders view.  Sort on the Type to segregate the images.  Highlight the images.  Right mouse click and drag one of the images to the desired folder.  When you let go of the right mouse button, you will be prompted to drop the images into the folder.
  • To set passwords,
    • FrontPage 2000 or 98
      • choose Tools > Security > Permissions > Settings > Use Unique Permissions For This Web > Apply.  Define the user name and password for the user(s.)  You can apply browse only, author and author/administer permissions.   You can devise sub-levels of security.
    • FrontPage 2002
      • choose Tools > Server > Administration Home...
      • Click Change anonymous access settings and set anonymous settings to off
      • Click manage users - Define the user name and password for the user(s.)  You can apply browse only, author and author/administer permissions.
  • If you are not working live on the site, as described above, you can edit on your hard drive (or personal Web server) and File > Publish to your desired location.
  • To set bookmarks, choose Insert > Bookmark.  Then, hyperlink as you usually do, but click on the Optional > Bookmark and the dropdown.  Bookmarks are effective for Back to Top and topic links.
  • Source control is a way for you to ensure that only one person at a time edits a file — a necessity in a multi-authoring environment. Microsoft FrontPage provides a built-in source control feature that lets web authors perform basic source control tasks.
    1. On the Tools menu, click Web Settings.
    2. On the General tab, select the Use document check-in and check-out check box.
  • Removing Word markup tags from Word or other documents saved as HTML.  Word and other word processors and spreadsheets are notorious for including a lot of extraneous code when saved as HTML or pasted into FrontPage.  Remove the extraneous code by editing and pasting the content into FrontPage.  Once it is pasted, click on the Smart Tags icon at the bottom of the page.  Choose Keep Text Only from the dropdown menu.

  • Inserting a hyperlink can be accomplished by highlighting the text or image you wish to hyperlink, selecting Insert > Hyperlink  and typing the URL (Web address) into the Address field at the bottom of the box that pops up.  If you are linking to an address on a site other than your own, you may wish to click on the Target Frame button and choose New Window.  (You can also right mouse click or click on the globe icon at the top of the page in order to create a hyperlink.)

Do not use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) on a FrontPage Extended server.  Doing so can cause file corruption.  You should Publish your files.

You can typically Edit and Copy files from one folder or SubWeb to another.

FrontPage's thumbnail capability allows the sizing of thumbnails.  To prepare a thumbnail, click on an image and choose the thumbnail icon at the lower left.

FrontPage's Help section and Microsoft's FrontPage Web area are well done.  Refer to them as questions come up.  Microsoft's Tools on the Web is a very good resource.
